2009 ANNUAL REPORT

THE MAI TAM HOUSE OF HOPE PROJECT.

HO CHI MINH CITY (SAIGON) VIETNAM

CARE AND SUPPORT FOR MOTHERS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN WITH HIV/AIDS

www.maitamhouseofhope.com

Annual Report, December 2009

The Mai Tam House of Hope continues to expand to meet the needs of the vulnerable children of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).

2009 was a significant year for the Center.  It received national and international recognition for its work and has become a national model for community care for HIV/AIDS orphans and widows. Director John Toai was invited to Rome to participate in a program/workshop sponsored by the United States Embassy and the Office of the Holy See

The Mai Tam House of Hope started with just 5 orphans.  Today the Center serves some 400 widows, orphans and affected children and of these, 67 orphans and 21 widows are resident at the Center.  There are another 27 mothers and 283 children receiving Mai Tam care and support in the community. This represents an increase of 121 new clients over 2008.

While the total number of donors declined in 2009 – possibly a result of the depressed economy – overall donations increased significantly through matching contributions and a special donation from Vancouver, Canada.  Through your generosity, we were able to generate some $46,000 in donations/pledges in 2009 (vs. $9,356 in 2008).  Some $7125 of late arriving donations/pledges will be in the kitty for distribution in early 2010.

Your donations have allowed us to meet the Mai Tam House of Hope Project’s goals of providing life-saving drugs, food, and now shelter to the orphans and widowed mothers.  The additional funds raised this year were used to support the construction and furnishing of the new residence.  The Vancouver donation specifically supported the construction of the new Center, which is fully operational.

As we have noted before, Director John Toai runs a separate hospice for severely ill adult AIDS patients.  While we do not solicit funds for the hospice, some donors have requested that their donations be used for the work at this facility.

With all good news, there has to be some sad news. Two children living in the Center (3% of the resident child population) passed away from medical complications.

Here are some websites to visit that comment on Mai Tam. You can see how many other individuals are very impressed with the Center’s work. You can Google Mai Tam and there are many references now to view.

OTHER OUTCOMES/UNEXPECTED OUTCOMES--POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE

  • The Vancouver donation was generated through the miracle of the internet (an unexpected visit to our website).

  • Another two fundraisers took place in Arlington, Virginia. We provided moral support for these groups.
